Andy Delort’s future at Montpellier in doubt after demotion to reserves

Andy Delort’s future at Montpellier appears uncertain after the striker was relegated to the reserve team last weekend. Montpellier have already been relegated to Ligue 2 following a dismal campaign in the French top flight with Delort failing to score in nine appearances (eight starts).

Newly appointed head coach Zoumana Camara chose not to include Delort in the squad for the trip to Marseille, instead giving a chance to 20-year-old forward Junior Ndiaye. The decision is seen as a clear sign of lost confidence in the veteran Algerian striker.

Delort, 33, returned to Montpellier on loan from MC Alger earlier this season but has struggled to make an impact, failing to score in his limited appearances. This marks a stark contrast to his previous spell at the club between 2018 and 2021, where he was a key figure before transferring to OGC Nice. Delort scored 3 goals in 15 appearances for MC Alger before moving back to France on loan.

With his loan deal expiring in June, Montpellier have no intention of extending Delort’s stay. His future beyond the summer remains unclear, and it is uncertain whether Camara will consider him for the remaining matches of the campaign.

Montpellier sit at the bottom of the Ligue 1 table with just 15 points. Their 5-1 defeat to Olympique de Marseille confirmed their relegation from the top division.
