Kaizer Chiefs’ medical ward is finally seeing some good news as the Soweto giants confirm a significant improvement in their previously concerning injury list.
This defensive boost comes at a crucial time as Amakhosi prepare to host Orbit College FC in a Betway Premiership fixture at FNB Stadium tonight (19:30).
The priority for Chiefs remains closing the gap on log leaders Mamelodi Sundowns in the chase for their first league title since 2015. With the Brazilians holding a three-point lead (though Chiefs have a game in hand), every point matters, making the return of defensive depth essential.
Chiefs co-coach Khalil Ben Youssef provided an encouraging update on three key defenders, two of whom had been facing long stints on the sidelines.
The positive news centres on centre-backs Given Msimango and Rushwin Dortley, along with left-back Paseka Mako.
Both Msimango and Mako are officially back in the fold, though their competitive returns will be managed carefully.
“Given is part of the team, and he is ready. Just now we are building his fitness; when he is ready, we will introduce him,” Ben Youssef stated. Msimango is cleared for action but needs to complete fitness work before returning to the matchday squad.
Mako, who had been sidelined for roughly a month, is also back in training. “Mako is part of the team, and he is also ready. He was with us last week. He started [training] last week. You know, after one month out, now he is just starting. He and Given continue to work with our fitness coach to meet their fitness [goals]. When they are ready, they will be part of the team.”
Long-term absentee Rushwin Dortley is also nearing a full return to team activities, providing further depth in the central defence.
“About Dortley… maybe in two weeks he will be back with us to start training.” While he won’t feature tonight, his impending return offers reassurance against future defensive crises.
The improving fitness situation is a welcome change for Chiefs, who had previously seen players like Ethan Chislett and striker Flavio da Silva suffer injuries even during routine training sessions.
Despite the positive injury update, Chiefs will be without key personnel for tonight’s clash against Orbit College. Inacio Miguel, the central defender, is suspended for the tie.
On the other hand, Khanyisa Mayo, the striker, remains a lingering injury worry, and his fitness is being closely monitored.
Chiefs are keen to secure a win tonight, building on their recent 1-0 victory over Durban City FC to maintain pressure on the leading pack as they manage the final stages of their injury rehabilitation program.
