Pirates edge Arrows as Sundowns squeeze past TS Galaxy

It was a night of contrasting drama in the Betway Premiership on Wednesday. Mamelodi Sundowns managed to grind out a narrow 1-0 victory against a determined TS Galaxy side, while Orlando Pirates overcame an equaliser scare to secure a commanding 3-1 win over Golden Arrows.

Sundowns Maintain Summit Lead

At the Loftus Versfeld Stadium in Pretoria, Sundowns hosted TS Galaxy and found the challenge tougher than expected. The breakthrough finally arrived in the 61st minute through Arthur Sales. It was a beautiful, quick team goal, with Iqraam Rayners delivering the perfect pass for Sales, who slotted the ball neatly into the bottom corner for the eventual winner.

With the victory, Sundowns firmly maintained their position at the summit of the log standings, opening a three-point gap over both second-placed Orlando Pirates and third-placed Kaizer Chiefs. Sundowns have now played 12 games, while their nearest rivals, Pirates, have two games in hand, and Chiefs have one.

Pirates Respond to Scare with Late Goals

Meanwhile, at a packed King Zwelithini Stadium in Umlazi, Bucs delivered a much-needed performance. The Buccaneers opened the scoring in the 23rd minute when Nkosikhona Ndaba’s cross deflected into the back of the net.

As the Soweto giants looked set to travel back to Soweto with a minimal advantage, Golden Arrows found an equaliser in the 72nd minute. Following an amazing effort by Angelo Van Rooi to set him up, Thokozani Khumalo scored to level the tie.

However, Pirates responded immediately and decisively. Patrick Maswanganyi quickly teed up Yanela Mbuthuma, who fired the ball into the far corner to restore the lead. Mbuthuma then completed his brace in the 87th minute, securing a 3-1 victory for Pirates and all three points.

The crucial win allowed Pirates to leapfrog Kaizer Chiefs into second place on the log, having played 10 games. The result ensures the title race remains fiercely competitive, with both Soweto giants keeping pressure firmly on the Brazilians.
