Gamondi to lead Tanzania at AFCON after replacing Hemed Suleiman

Argentine coach Miguel Gamondi has been appointed as the new head coach of the Tanzania national team, effective immediately, replacing Hemed Suleiman.

Pan-Africa Football can report the agreement had been in place for some time but was delayed, but now it’s fully completed. Gamondi will lead Tanzania at the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) in Morocco.

A statement from TFF confirmed the appointment of Gamondi, who was attached to Singida Black Stars in the Mainland Premier League.

Gamondi arrived in Tanzania to coach Yanga

The statement read in part: “Following the decision, TFF has appointed Singida Black Stars head coach Miguel Gamondi to serve as the interim head coach of Taifa Stars,” the statement reads.

“Discussions have been held between TFF and Singida Black Stars about the coach taking up his new responsibilities.”

At AFCON, the Taifa Stars are set to face Nigeria, Uganda, and Tunisia in the group stage. The 61-year-old arrived in Tanzania to coach champions Young Africans. While at Yanga, Gamondi managed 40 league matches, won 34, drew two games and suffered four defeats.

He led the club to unprecedented success in recent years, including breaking a 25-year drought by reaching the CAF Champions League group stage and advancing to the quarterfinals.

Gamondi further guided them to the Premier League title, the Federation Cup, and the Community Shield, while also delivering unforgettable victories against both domestic and continental rivals.

Gamondi recently helped Singida to secure their first-ever CECAFA Kagame Cup trophy after defeating Al Hilal of Sudan 2-1 in the final. He also helped the side to reach the group stages of the CAF Confederation Cup for the first time in their history.

Born in Olavarría, Gamondi played for local club Ferrocarril Sud and managed several clubs in Argentina, including Ferro Carril Sud, Racing, El Fortín, San Martín de Tucumán and Racing Club de Avellaneda. In 2000, he moved to Africa to join Oscar Fulloné as an assistant coach to the Libyan side Al-Ahly.
