Kaizer Chiefs co-coach Cedric Kaze has wasted no time singing the praises of Asanele Velebayi, highlighting four specific attributes that impressed him following the winger’s explosive first start for the club.
Velebayi was a standout performer, playing a critical role in the Amakhosi’s emphatic 4-1 Betway Premiership victory over Orbit College FC on Tuesday.
Stepping into the side in place of the injured Glody Lillepo, the former Cape Town Spurs attacker proved to be a relentless menace to the Orbit defence, getting fouled three times—more than any other player on the pitch—before his substitution for Pule Mmodi in the second half.
Kaze used the post-match media briefing to explain the careful process of introducing new talent, stating: “Sometimes they take too long, but when you rush, you can kill the player’s confidence and things like that.”
However, the coach admitted that Velebayi, in particular, possesses a unique set of skills that the team needs, affirming he “brings something different.” Kaze then detailed the four areas where the young winger provides immediate value:
1. Willingness to Go One-on-One: Kaze praised Velebayi’s direct attacking mindset. “He’s a player who is willing to go one-on-one,” confirming the winger’s desire to isolate and beat his defender.
2. Loves to Attack Space: He excels when placed in attacking situations. “He’s a player who, when you create those situations, you give the ball to him in a one-on-one situation, he’s a player who likes to go forward.”
3. Cross-Field Threat: Velebayi possesses essential delivery skills. “He’s a player who can cross.” This ability adds a crucial dimension to Chiefs’ attack from the wide areas.
4. Cutting Inside and Shooting: The winger is not limited to outside play; he can also be a goal threat himself. “He’s a player who can cut inside and shoot.”
Concluding his praise, Kaze expressed confidence that the exciting performance was just the beginning. “The performance was good for the first time. And we hope that, and we are sure that he can do even more.”
Velebayi’s debut confirms Chiefs have a new, dynamic option capable of breaking down stubborn defences and adding essential creativity to their title pursuit.
