Uganda are determined to reignite their FIFA U17 World Cup campaign when they take on Chile U17 in a decisive Group Stage clash on Saturday at Aspire Zone – Pitch 8, Doha. Kick-off is set for 3:30 PM local time (3:30 PM EAT).
After a spirited performance in their historic debut that ended in a heartbreaking 2-1 loss to Canada, the young Cubs are eager to bounce back and keep their qualification hopes alive.
Head coach Brian Ssenyondo has rallied his troops to remain focused and positive ahead of the must-win tie, underlining that the team’s mission remains intact despite the early setback.
“Our primary goal here is to progress from the group stages, and football gives you many chances,” Ssenyondo said. “Tomorrow, we have another opportunity to achieve that target — if we win, we’ll be right back in contention.
We played good football against Canada and gave a strong fight. Any team can lose that way, but the most important thing is to pick lessons and apply them in the next game.”
Ssenyondo also provided tactical insight into Saturday’s opponents, describing Chile as a disciplined and compact team.
“They play in a 1-5-3-2 system, which shows they are very organised defensively and avoid conceding easily. We’ve studied their style and I believe we can break them down to get the goals we need,” he added.
Among the standout performers in the first match was goalkeeper Mazige Gilbert, who reflected on his debut World Cup appearance with pride and renewed determination.
“It felt amazing to play at the World Cup — that’s every player’s dream,” said Mazige. “I did my best to help the team win, but maybe that’s what God decided. We’re now fully focused on Chile, and I promise to give my best so we can win and qualify for the next round.”
The Cubs completed their final training session at Al Thumama Stadium on Friday, with optimism and belief echoing across the camp. Their morale received a major boost from FUFA President Hon. Magogo Moses Hassim, who has been with the team since their opening fixture, encouraging them to keep fighting for national pride.
Magogo praised the players’ spirit and composure, urging them to maintain belief and carry Uganda’s flag with honour. His continued support, alongside the growing Ugandan community cheering from Qatar and the UAE, has further inspired the youngsters ahead of the crucial tie.
