Zambia national U-17 national team capped off a memorable group-stage campaign at the FIFA U-17 World Cup Qatar 2025 with a hard-fought 1-1 draw against four-time champions Brazil at the Aspire Zone in Doha.
The result meant Zambia finished second in Group H with seven points from three matches, level with Brazil but behind on goal difference. Brazil topped the group with a goal difference of +11, while Zambia finished with +5 goal difference on seven points, same with Brazil.
Both nations advanced to the Round of 32 after an impressive campaign.
Zambia coach Dennis Makinka hailed his players’ performance and character after the match, praising their determination and unity against a strong Brazilian side.
“I think great character from the boys , credit for the hard work. They fought like I have never seen before,” said Makinka as quoted by FAZ Media. “We conceded after a few minutes of lapse in concentration.
“We had planned our defending well, but we slept a bit and allowed them to come back. Still, I’m very proud of the boys. We told them to calm down, that it was just any other game, and to enjoy it. We emphasized keeping the ball and maintaining composure.”
He added: “We need to improve, but the boys are improving with every game. They’re putting in their best, and this result will serve as a morale booster. Our target has always been to go as far as we can, we’re not limiting ourselves.”
Goalkeeper Christo Chitambala, who put on a confident display between the posts, expressed pride in his team’s effort and promised continued hard work.
“We wanted a win, but favour wasn’t on our side, unfortunately, we drew. I followed all the instructions I was given and focused fully each time I stepped onto the pitch,” said Chitambala.
“I feel good every time I make a save, but when I concede, I know its part of the game. The fans should continue supporting us, we’ll keep working hard to bring the trophy home. It’s possible.”
Zambia concluded the group stage unbeaten, with victories over Indonesia (3-1) and Honduras (5-2), and the statement draw against Brazil (1-1). They have scored nine goals and conceded four, an outstanding record for their debut in such a tough group.
