Ali Maaloul made his return to the Tunisia national team, ending a 665-day absence from international duty. The experienced left-back, who now represents CS Sfaxien, captained the Carthage Eagles in their friendly draw (1-1) against Mauritania as part of Tunisia’s preparations for upcoming competitions, including the Africa Cup of Nations set to take place in Morocco later this year.
Tunisia opened the scoring in the 38th minute through Firas Chaouat, before Mauritania equalized in the second half, with Mohamed Sar finding the net in the 50th minute.
Head coach Sami Trabelsi entrusted Maaloul with a starting role, allowing him to wear the captain’s armband and marking a symbolic comeback for one of Tunisia’s most consistent performers over the past decade.
Maaloul’s last appearance for Tunisia came in January 2024 during the Africa Cup of Nations clash against Namibia. Since then, he has been absent from the national setup until his recent recall.
This season, the veteran defender has been a key figure for CS Sfaxien, wearing the captain’s armband and contributing two assists in eight league appearances. His return to the national team adds experience to Carthage Eagles ahead of continental challenges.
