Former Orlando Pirates coach, José Riveiro, is set to make a sensational, yet unexpected, return to South African shores next week, immediately sparking intense speculation regarding a potential coaching comeback in the Betway Premiership.
The Spanish tactician, endearingly known as ‘El Profesor’ during his trophy-laden tenure with the Soweto giants, has been confirmed as a high-profile guest for the upcoming Carling Knockout Cup Campaign Media Update in Sandton next week.
While his official capacity is strictly as a media and brand engagement guest—joining Carling Black Label Brand Director Kerryn Greenleaf and respected analyst Simphiwe Dludlu—the timing and significance of his appearance have already set the local football rumour mill into overdrive.
Riveiro’s previous spell in Mzansi was marked by notable success, guiding the Buccaneers to multiple domestic cups and instilling a highly praised tactical discipline. His quiet, analytical demeanour and proven ability to deliver silverware made him a standout figure before his departure. He also successfully led the Carling All-Star team in successive editions of the Carling Black Label Cup.
“Whether this is just a brief appearance or the start of something bigger, one thing is certain—José Riveiro is back in Mzansi, and the football world will be watching closely,” noted an insider close to the event organisers.
Riveiro’s return comes at a fascinating junction in the domestic league. With the January transfer window looming and several Premiership clubs reportedly scrutinising the coaching market, his presence at a high-profile football event tied to one of the country’s biggest tournaments is widely seen as an opportune move.
Although there has been no official indication of a coaching offer or negotiation, the simple fact that a coach of his pedigree is physically present in South Africa is sufficient to fuel talk of unfinished business at the professional level.
The event, which will provide updates on the highly anticipated 2025 Carling Black Label Cup, is scheduled for Wednesday, November 19, 2025, in Sandton, starting at 11:30 am.
For now, ‘El Profesor’ is here to talk cups, but everyone is wondering if he might be considering a long-term return to the dugout.
