Ghana suffered a 2-0 defeat against Japan in the 2025 Kirin Cup at the Toyota Stadium in Aichi on Friday morning.
Japan proved too strong for the West African nation in the first half, dominating play with quick passing and swift wing play as Ghana resorted to sitting deep in their half.
The Blue Samurai pried open Ghana’s defence with a quick break when Bournemouth striker Antoine Semenyo lost the ball in the middle of the park.
AS Monaco midfielder Takumi Minamino found himself in the right position to slot in from the penalty area with 12th minutes played.
The hosts continued to press for more goals with Ghana coming slightly close on two occasions, with Brandon Thomas-Asante, who was, however, perfectly kept in check with the first half closing at 1-0 for the Asians.
The Black Stars were dealt a huge blow in the second half when Toulouse midfielder Francis Abu broke his leg following a horrible tackle in the 50th minute, with his place taken by Alidu Seidu.
Japan doubled their lead ten minutes later with Frankfurt winger, Ritsu Doan, swerving an array of Ghana defence to put the ball behind Joseph Anang in the post for Ghana. Both countries are using the friendly to test their squad ahead of the 2026 FIFA Cup to be co-hosted by Canada, the USA and Mexico. Ghana will next play South Korea in another international friendly at the Seoul World Cup Stadium on October 18.
