U-17 World Cup: Uganda bounce Senegal; South Africa eliminated

Uganda’s dream run continued at the 2025 FIFA U-17 World Cup against Senegal while South Africa were eliminated in the Round of 32 on Saturday in Qatar.

Abubakali Walusimbe’s powerful strike from distance in the 15th minute was enough for the Uganda team to advance to the Round of 16 with a 1-0 victory over Senegal. The Vipers SC attacker collected a pass from Hamuza Sengooba just outside the penalty area and fired a perfect effort for the only goal of the match.

Senegal were dangerous throughout the first half but failed to find a response. Cubs goalkeeper Edrisah Waibi was called into action on multiple occasions and put in a strong performance to maintain his team’s lead by halftime.

In the second half, the East African side were much more effective at limiting the opposition attack and successfully killed off the match for the victory. Senegal appeared to equalize late but forward Babacar Bousso was flagged for offsides after finishing from a cross.

The Cubs now await the winner between Germany and Burkina Faso, who are currently in action at the time of publication with Burkina Faso ahead 1-0 late in the first half. Tunisia are also set to kick off against Austria shortly.

In the other early match from Saturday involving African teams, South Africa conceded all three goals in the second half as Amajimbos fell 0-3 to Japan. A dominant performance from the Asian representatives arrived after halftime following a frustrating first half that saw the South African team hold out.

But Japan were much more efficient on their opportunities while the Amajimbos attack stagnated. When Hiroto Asada and Minato Yoshida scored within the opening fifteen minutes in the second half, the result was sealed for the Japanese.
