‘Mohamed Salah considered international retirement after Senegal defeat’ – Trezeguet

Egypt star Mahmoud Hassan “Trezeguet” has revealed that Mohamed Salah considered retiring from international football following Egypt’s heartbreaking defeat to Senegal in the 2022 World Cup playoff.

Speaking to MBC Masr 2, Trezeguet said Salah was devastated after Egypt missed out on qualification for the 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar.

“Mohamed Salah cried after the loss to Senegal,” Trezeguet recalled according to Yallakora.
“He told me in the dressing room that he was going to retire from international football. He said, ‘I can’t believe we’re not going to the 2022 World Cup.’
“He is my friend and brother, and at the same time my role model who I learn from.”

Trezeguet added that Salah has moved past that difficult moment and is currently performing at his highest level.

“Salah is now in top form, and we want to make the most of all the stars we have to win the Africa Cup of Nations—whether it’s held in Morocco or even in China,” he said.
“We are Egypt, the most decorated nation, the ones who wrote history. We will fight to win the title.”

Egypt has already secured qualification for the 2026 FIFA World Cup, and the national team is going to participate in the Africa Cup of Nations in Morocco this December.
