Ethiopia: Saint George coach delighted with early season form

Saint George head coach Fasil Tekalegn said his charges are now beaming with confidence after securing a 1-0 win over reigning Ethiopian champions Ethiopian Insurance. The Horsemen are second in the CBE Ethiopian Premier League with four wins in five games.

Tekalegn, a former player at the club, told OBN TV that his side achieved what they sought in the opening weeks of the topflight. “We have played five games, and we have secured what we wanted so far. We wanted to maintain a perfect start, but we lost one game. The game against Insurance was a tough one. Beating such an opponent really made our fans happy, and we also boosted our confidence with it.”

The Addis Ababa giants started off the season with a massive Sheger Derby against cross-city rivals Ethiopian Coffee. Despite losing to newly promoted side Sheger Ketema, the club recorded an improved result.

Tekalegn acknowledged that the journey is long. “We have only played five games. We are still getting started. Any game in the league is not a walk in the park. We will do our homework and work more on our weaknesses so that we can win matches.”

The record champions last won a league title two seasons ago. A rift between the club hierarchy has also weakened the club’s overall performance. The current improved results of the capital side are expected to persist in Hawassa in week 6 as they take on Hadiya Hosaina.

The Horsemen are second in the standing with 12 points, level with leaders Sidama Coffee.
