Kaizer Chiefs legends Doctor Khumalo and Mark Williams have shared their reactions after achieving one of South African football’s highest honours: induction into the South African Hall of Fame alongside five other prominent figures.
The two legends were inducted on Friday, joining a distinguished class that included their 1996 Africa Cup of Nations-winning teammates Mark Fish and the late Phil Masinga, as well as the late coach Clive Barker.
Former Bafana Bafana captain Aaron Mokoena, who played in the English Premier League and Banyana Banyana legend Janine Van Wyk were also honoured.
The former Amakhosi captain and club stalwart, who played over 400 matches for Kaizer Chiefs, was gracious upon accepting his award.
“I want to express my deepest gratitude to the Khosi family for their support and encouragement. I could not have done it without them supporting me every step of the way,” he said. “Above all, I would like to thank the Chairman for his support and dedication in guiding me through this challenging journey.”
Similar to Khumalo, Williams was celebrated by numerous former Chiefs teammates and current club players.
The legendary defender responded to the honour, stating: “For me and what I went through in my football career, it was a wonderful occasion to be honoured while I am still alive. I have seen many players honoured after they have passed, and I think it is important they celebrate legends while they are still alive.
“This was one of the biggest teams I played for, and I am celebrating this with all my former Chiefs teammates,” he added. “I collected, but it was for all of u. On this occasion, I also remember the late Isaac Kungoane, one of my former teammates who schooled me in the culture of Chiefs. I thank all the guys for acknowledging my achievement and their messages.”
Meanwhile, Chiefs Marketing Director Jessica Motaung offered warm congratulations to Doctor Khumalo and Mark Williams, emphasising the significance of their induction into the SA Hall of Fame for the club’s legacy.
“Doctor and Mark made an impact for the Club and Bafana Bafana. They brought joy and inspired many young people,” Motaung stated. “To be recognised in this way is a deserved honour, and to have our former players recognised in this way is also a mark of honour and recognition for the club.”
The induction of Khumalo and Williams swells the number of personnel linked to Kaizer Chiefs in the SA Hall of Fame to seven. This exclusive group includes Club Chairman Dr Kaizer Motaung (inducted in 2023), as well as Lucas Radebe, Teenage Dladla, Neil Tovey, and the late Ace Ntsoelengoe—the club’s record scorer—who were all inducted together in 2024.
