ZESCO United head coach Mathews Ndhlovu has revealed his side is fully aware of the task ahead as they prepare to face Egyptian giants Zamalek SC in their opening CAF Confederation Cup group stage fixture at Cairo International Stadium on Sunday.

Speaking to the media in Cairo, Ndhlovu noted preparations for the continental campaign began immediately after the team secured qualification.

“Our planning started the moment we qualified for the CAF Confederation Cup. Our approach has always been to take each game as it comes. Now that we are in the group stages, we understand what is at stake. Of course, the people of Egypt like to coach football and we are familiar with that environment,” explained Ndlovu.

‘Everyone is looking forward to the match’

Speaking on behalf of the players. captain Lindo Mkhonta highlighted the positive atmosphere within the squad, stating that the players are motivated and ready for the challenge.

“The spirit in camp is very high. Everyone is looking forward to the match, and the coaches have encouraged us to overcome whatever situation we may face. We are prepared,” said Mkhonta.

Ahead of the game, Zambia’s Ambassador to Egypt Major General Topply Mulambo Lubaya, visited the team to wish them well.

“I warmly welcome you to Egypt and can only wish you the best as we get on the pitch on Sunday,” he said. “When you go to play, the most important thing is discipline and being focused on what you want to achieve. Let’s play together and play to win.”

Lubaya added, “We’re proud that ZESCO qualified for the CAF Confederation Cup. Let’s deliver wherever we go, raise the bar in the manner we play, and carry ourselves with pride on and off the pitch. Let’s show that we’re real Zambians who love peace, unity, and teamwork.”

Apart from Zamalek, ZESCO United will face Al Masry, and Kaizer Chiefs in Grioup D. This will be ZESCO United’s third appearance in the Confederation Cup, and the team is aiming to begin their campaign on a positive note.
