Maboe explains what Chiefs are expecting from Al Masry

Kaizer Chiefs midfielder Lebohang Maboe has offered a preview of what the Glamour Boys expect from their Egyptian opponents, Al Masry, ahead of their CAF Confederation Cup group stage opener this Sunday.

Chiefs kick off their challenging Group D campaign—which also features continental heavyweights Zesco United and Zamalek SC—with a critical away fixture at the New Suez Stadium in Suez, scheduled for an 18:00 (SA time) kick-off.

Amakhosi advanced to this stage after successfully navigating past Angolan side Kabuscorp SCP and Tanzania’s AS Simba in the preliminary rounds.

Seeking a perfect start in the competition, the Soweto giants are leaning on the continental experience of new signing Maboe. The talented attacker, who joined Chiefs in the off-season and has a Champions League pedigree, including winning the 2023 African Football League (AFL) with Mamelodi Sundowns, detailed the tactical blueprint Al Masry is likely to deploy.

Maboe On Al Masry: ‘They Are Well-Defined’

Maboe confirmed the squad’s readiness and focus on the important continental journey. “We have looked sharp in training and are all amped up for the game on Sunday,” Maboe stated.

Acknowledging the traditional difficulty of playing North African opposition away from home, the midfielder stressed the necessity of a positive result.

“Given that it’s an away game, we expect a tough, physical challenge, but we know the importance of getting off to a good start, so we are going there to get something, not just make up numbers.”

Maboe then provided an in-depth tactical analysis of their Egyptian rivals, highlighting their structural consistency.

“Al Masry is a good side with a well-defined shape, using a diamond midfield and wingbacks, plus two mobile strikers up front,” he explained.

Despite recognising the quality of their hosts, Maboe maintains belief in the Chiefs squad to rise to the occasion.

“We are aware that we’ll have to be at our best against them on their home turf, but we believe in ourselves and are looking forward to the test.”
