ZESCO United coach Mathews Ndhlovu described the team’s 1-0 defeat against Zamalek in the CAF Confederation Cup as a tactical contest and praised the team’s response in the second half at the Cairo International Stadium on Sunday.
Zamalek started strongly and created early threats, but goalkeeper Philip Sakauta produced several good saves to keep the match level. The hosts eventually broke the deadlock in the 42nd minute through Seifeddine Jaziri, giving them a 1-0 lead at the break.
In the second half, ZESCO United introduced Pascal Phiri and Peter Musukuma in place of Abraham Siankombo and Solomon Sakala. The changes brought improved momentum, with ZESCO controlling large parts of the half and creating opportunities, but the team was unable to convert the chances.
“The game was quite tactical. We were playing at a high level, especially in the group stages. Zamalek put us under pressure early on, and we prepared not to concede an early goal,” said Ndlovu after the game.
“The boys did their best, but we lost concentration towards the end of the first half and Zamalek took their chance. In the second half, we responded well but missed several opportunities. It is an important reminder that we need to work on our clinical finishing.”
The Zambian Super League side will shift focus to their next CAF fixture against Al Masry set for Friday, November 28, at the Levy Mwanawasa Stadium in Ndola.
