Broos names preliminary Bafana squad for AFCON in Morocco

Bafana Bafana head coach Hugo Broos officially announced his preliminary squad today for the upcoming 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) tournament, set to kick off in Morocco on December 21, 2025.

The selection marks the crucial first step in South Africa’s preparations for the continent’s flagship event, which runs through to January 18, 2026.

Bafana Bafana find themselves placed in Group B, arguably one of the most competitive sections, alongside continental heavyweights Egypt, neighbours Zimbabwe, and tough rivals Angola.

Broos’s men will begin their AFCON journey at the state-of-the-art Grand Stade de Marrakech (capacity 41,245) on December 22, 2025, facing Angola in a crucial opening fixture.

Their campaign intensifies on Boxing Day (December 26), when they take on the formidable Egypt at the Adrar Stadium in Agadir.

South Africa will conclude their Group B schedule by locking horns with regional rivals Zimbabwe back at the Grand Stade de Marrakech on December 29, 2025.

The 24 qualified nations are divided into six groups of four. To advance to the knockout stage, Bafana must secure one of the top two spots in Group B, or finish as one of the four best third-placed teams across the tournament.
