Tawanda Maswanhise becomes Scottish Premiership top scorer

Motherwell and Zimbabwe forward Tawanda Maswanhise completed his rapid ascension to the top of the Scottish Premiership scoring chart with a penalty kick in Motherwell’s 2-0 victory over Hibernian on Tuesday.

He now has three goals in his last two matches, bringing his total to eight goals in thirteen league matches. Motherwell moved into a top-5 position on the Premiership table, with 21 points from 13 matches.

A strong start carried the hosts to victory and it was the Harare native who opened the scoring. After a VAR review confirmed an infraction in the Hibs penalty area, Maswanhise calmly dispatched his spot kick.

Elijah Just doubled the lead for the hosts in the 22nd minute and that was all they needed for three points. Grant Hanley was sent off with a red card before halftime and the visitors from Edinburgh had little hope of gaining anything from that point on.

Former Leicester City youth product Maswanhise enjoyed a decent first season at his current club but the ongoing campaign has seen him take his game to another level. The 23-year-old has already surpassed last season’s goal total and he also has enjoyed success in Scotland’s League Cup, scoring four goals during Motherwell’s run to the semifinals.

Next up on the fixture list is another home clash, this time against Hibs’ local rivals Heart of Midlothian.
