Gor Mahia humiliated by promoted side APS Bomet in five-goal thriller

Kenyan Premier League giants Gor Mahia suffered their worst defeat of the current FKF Premier League campaign after going down 4-1 against promoted side APS Bomet at Nyayo Stadium on Tuesday.

K’Ogalo went into the fixture having won two straight matches and sitting on the top of the 18-Premier League table. After their 1-1 draw against Ulinzi Stars, Gor Mahia went ahead to defeat champions Kenya Police 2-0, and Tusker 1-0.

Gor Mahia scored the opener with only five minutes played from a corner kick. Francis Omondi delivered a superb corner which APS Bomet defenders failed to clear, allowing Ghanaian forward George Amonoo to sneak the loose ball into the back of the net.

However, in the 39th minute, the new boys in the top-flight levelled matters. Michael Kibwage fouled a Bomet player and Hansel Ochieng stepped forward to send goalkeeper Byrne Omondi the wrong way.

APS Bomet went into the half-time break leading 2-1

Ochieng, who was star player for APS Bomet, made it 2-1 in the 43rd minute after he weaved past Gor Mahia’s rearguard before slotting the ball home. The law enforcers went into the half-time break enjoying a 2-1 lead.

At the start of the second half, Gor Mahia coach Charles Akonnor tried to bring in new faces in a bid to cut APS Bomet lead. Austin Odhiambo, Enock Morrison, Paul Ochuoga and Sharif Musa were introduced for Samuel Kapen, Ben Stanley, Chris Ochieng and Levin Odhiambo.

However, the game remained 2-1 until the 78th minute when Ochieng completed his hat-trick against the record champions. With Gor Mahia chasing to get something from the fixture, APS Bomet grabbed the fourth when Rodgers Kipkemoi managed to beat Omondi in a one-on-one situation.

The defeat denied Gor Mahia an opportunity to move four points clear as they remained top with 19 points, one less than second-placed Kakamega Homeboyz.

Despite the win, APS Bomet remained rooted in the relegation zone with eight points from nine matches.
