FIFA Arab Cup: Brave Somalia fall to Oman on penalties

A resilient Somalia side crashed out of qualifying for the 2025 FIFA Arab Cup following their 4–2 penalty shootout defeat at the hands of Oman. The Ocean Stars held the Gulf nation to a goalless draw during the tie.

It was an evenly matched first half between the two sides. Yuusuf Cali’s strike from range was easily collected by Oman keeper Ibrahim Al Mukhaini. The half’s best scoring chance came for Oman through Zahir Al Aghbari, but his strike went wide from close range.

The second half saw an improved Oman side as they dominated the proceedings. Nasser Al Rawahi tested Somali keeper Saciid Dhadho, and Abdulsamed Abdullahi could have given Somalia the lead at the other end. Oman’s constant pressure was dealt with successfully by the East African nation as the teams headed to the penalty shootout.

Sakariya Hassan and Cali missed their respective penalties as Oman beat Somalia 4–2 in the shootout.

Somalia bow out of the Arab Cup with their heads held high. They managed to defeat Bahrain twice during friendly matches. Head coach Yusuf Ali Nur is expected to build the team for future tournaments after a commendable performance during the month.
