UEFA Champions League: Geny Catamo influential in Sporting win

Geny Catamo provided two assists as Portuguese club Sporting CP continued their strong continental form with a 3-0 victory over Club Brugge in the UEFA Champions League.

Mozambique’s biggest football star was in fine form on Wednesday, setting up both first half goals for the hosts as they moved into a top-10 position on the league phase table.

Sporting snatched the lead in the 24th minute when Catamo was isolated on the right wing. After a quick dribbling move to escape his defender, the former Black Bulls star sent a ball across that was spilled by goalkeeper Nordin Jackers. Geovany Quenda collected the ball and turned to fire in the opening goal.

Shortly after the half hour mark, the lead was doubled with an even more impressive assist. After taking control of a loose ball in the midfield, Catamo spun around and executed a perfect blind pass into the path of Luis Suarez and the Colombian internatonal finished to make it 2-0 in the 31st minute.

Visitors Club Brugge provided little resistance and two quick concessions in the first half left them with a mountain to climb that was too tall. Former FC Barcelona and Wolves forward Trincao added one more goal in the final half hour to complete a convincing victory.

The hosts had little trouble holding onto their lead in Lisbon and now have 10 points from 5 matches, leaving them in 8th place on the 36-team table.

Geny Catamo has dealt with injuries and inconsistent form this season but is still maintaining a regular role for the current second place team in Portugal’s Primeira Liga. He now has 1 goal and 3 assists in 14 matches across all competitions.
