Former Mamelodi Sundowns winger Luis Miquissone’s hat-trick powered União Desportiva do Songo (UD Songo) to the Mozambique league title with four goals to spare on Thursday.
Ahead of the decisive game, UD Songo’s 39-year-old coach Daude Razaque featured a strong possible line up. The starting XI comprised Miquissone, captain Elias Domingues Pelembe and Malawian winger Yamikani Chester, among others.
The 42-year-old former Sundowns and SuperSport United attacker Pelembe and Miquissone are heading to the Africa Cup of Nations finals in Morocco with Mozambique.
Surprisingly, star striker Lau King started the game from the technical bench.
The former Al Ahly star scored in the eighth, 12th and 38th minutes before Alcides’ late double completed the 5-1 rout of GDR TextAfrica to seal the 2025 Moçambola league championship for the first time in three years.
Razaque’s team took their tally to 59 points from 22 games, 19 points ahead of second-placed Black Bulls who have two games in hand. The outgoing champions cannot not reach the current ceiling of points for UD Songo.
On a personal level, the treble of goals has since enhanced Miquissone’s prospects of claiming the Golden Boot award. The former Simba SC man has 14 goals, four ahead of Chingale de Tete FC’s Chantolo while Chester and team mate Reis boast nine goals each.
UD Songo have since taken their tally of league titles to four, way behind 10 for record champions Ferroviário Maputo de Maputo and Costa do Sol.
Black Bulls, who were the defending champions, did not do enough to defend the championship. Instead it is the Tete-based club that will represent the former Portuguese colony in next year’s CAF Champions League.
