Kessie and Mahrez lead Al Ahli to King’s Cup semifinals

Riyad Mahrez and Frank Kessie were instrumental in a dramatic 4-3 comeback victory for Al Ahli over Al Qadsiah on Friday in Saudi Arabia’s King’s Cup.

After falling behind 1-3 by halftime, hosts Al Ahli surged back in an inspired second half performance to level the match and win in a penalty kick shootout. Kessie set up the second goal for the Jeddah giants before heading in the equalizer from a brilliant cross by Mahrez.

The job was far from done at that point. Ahli had a late goal disallowed that appeared to be the match winner, sending the match to extra time. After a goalless extra time session, the victors were perfect on their penalty kicks with Mahrez and Kessie each converting their attempts before Firas Al Buraikan converted the winning spot kick.

The result advances Al Ahli to the semifinals of the competition. Earlier on Friday, Al Kholood advanced past Al Khaleej with Comoros national team star forward Myziane Maolida scoring in a 4-3 victory. The other two quarterfinal matches will take place on Saturday with Al Hilal and Al Ittihad each in action.
