Despite midfielder Idrissa Gana Gueye and Everton teammate Michael Keane reconciling during the Thursday training session, the Premier League FA have rejected an appeal by the club to lift the red card on the Senegalese player.
Gueye was shown a straight red card during Everton’s Premier League clash with Man United after striking Keane during an argument between the two players in the early stages of the match. The Senegal international reacted angrily after a defensive lapse, and the referee spotted the altercation, sending him off in the 13th minute.
Despite being reduced to ten men, Everton showed impressive resilience and went on to claim a 1–0 victory over Manchester United in the Premier League fixture.
“We have appealed [against the red card] and our appeal was turned down,” Everton manager David Moyes said as quoted by BBC Sports.
“We haven’t been given any reason why it was turned down, but we did appeal it – immediately.”
Following the match, the Senegalese midfielder publicly issued an apology on his Instagram account, taking full responsibility for his reaction.
“It was over immediately,” added Moyes. “It was done, that was it. We moved on quite quickly and it was all sorted within the dressing room.
“We want passion. We don’t always want it in the style it showed up on Monday night but we certainly want that passion and commitment from all the players.”
Gueye, who has started every Premier League game for Everton this season, will have to miss their next assignment against Newcastle United at Hill Dickinson Stadium on Saturday.
