Onuachu claims Super Lig top scorer status with brace

Paul Onuachu took the lead in the top scorer race in Turkiye’s Super Lig after scoring twice in Trabzonspor’s 3-1 victory over Konyaspor on Saturday.

The prolific striker was in top poaching form for the hosts, who overcame an early deficit to claim three points at the Papara Park in Trabzon.

After an own goal left Trabzonspor behind inside seventeen minutes, an even battle ensued for the remainder of the first half. However, the hosts pulled level close to halftime after a VAR review determined that Ernest Muci was fouled in the Konyaspor penalty area. Onuachu did the honors from the spot to make it 1-1.

A dream start to the second half put Trabzonspor in the driver’s seat against a fierce opponent. In the 50th minute, Onuachu displayed his excellent instincts in the penalty area when he received a pass from Mustafa Eskihellaç and slickly maneuvered around a defender to fire in the eventual match winner.

Muci added a goal six minutes later for the hosts, who emerged victorious to strengthen their hold on third place. Trabzonspor are level with Fenerbahce on 31 points while leaders Galatasaray remain a point ahead at the top of the table. Both Istanbul giants have a game in hand on Trabzonspor.

Onuachu now has eleven goals in fourteen appearances this season. The towering Nigerian returned to familiar surroundings after a failed move to English club Southampton and is back in his comfort zone after previously starring for the club on the Black Sea coast.
