Fulham head coach Marco Silva has discussed the importance of Nigeria winger Samuel Chukwueze after he played a key role in helping Fulham secure a 2-1 Premier League victory against Tottenham Hotspur at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium on Saturday.
During the fixture, Chukwueze popped up with an assist as the Cotaggers raced into a 2-0 lead courtesy of two goals in the opening two minutes. First, Kenny Tete scored the opener with only two minutes played, before Harry Wilson made it 2-0 in the sixth minute.
Ghana midfielder Mohammed Kudus pulled a goal back for Spurs in the 59th minute but it was not enough to deny Chukwueze and Fulham a chance to register their fifth win of the campaign.
“He was definitely knocking on the door before the game. He is a very good player, we all know that,” Silva said in quotes revealed by Fulham correspondent Jack Kelly as quoted by Complete Sports.
“Unfortunately, with some injuries, three international breaks away from us, it probably didn’t give us time to get to know each other better. We have worked together for short spells, but he has always shown a very good level. It’s just a matter of him being in his best physical condition to start games.
“He started because he deserved it, and it was another great performance from him. Let’s hope he can continue in this way and be more resilient over 90 minutes. He is going to be a very important player for us, like he is right now.”
Speaking after the game, Chukwueze praised Nigerian teammates Alex Iwobi and Calvin Bassey for the work they are doing to make him feel comfortable at the club.
He said: “They push me really hard in training and keep me motivated. We are so proud of the result today. We worked for it on the training pitch. The players gave everything on the field. We had to defend all our life. This win is very, very important, he stated after the keenly contested encounter.”
Out of six Premier League matches for Fulham, Chukwueze has contributed three assists.
