AFCON: Nigeria coach Chelle unveils provisional squad

Nigeria coach Eric Chelle announced the Super Eagles’ 55-man provisional list for the upcoming 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) on Tuesday.

The three-time African champions’ provisional squad includes captain William Troost-Ekong, Galatasaray striker Victor Osimhen, vice-captain Wilfred Ndidi and goalkeeper Stanley Nwabali.

​Also included is Udinese goalkeeper Maduka Okoye (of Italian Serie A), defenders Zaidu Sanusi, Calvin Bassey, and Semi Ajayi as well as midfielders Frank Onyeka, Alex Iwobi, and Raphael Onyedika.

​Some of the forwards who made the list are Ademola Lookman, Samuel Chukwueze, Moses Simon and Chidera Ejuke.

​The list also includes Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL) stars Abdulrasheed Shehu, Ebenezer Harcourt, Ekeson Okorie, Chisom Orji, and Adekunle Adeleke.

​A final list of 28 players will be drawn from the provisional list in a matter of days. The Super Eagles are scheduled to arrive at a training camp in Egypt on Wednesday, December 10.

​The team is expected to play a couple of friendly matches before the tournament begins on Sunday, December 21.

​Nigeria is in Group C of the tournament alongside Tanzania, Tunisia, and Uganda. They begin play on December 23 against Tanzania.
