“It’s still too early to give up on World Cup dreams” – Utaka to Nigerians

Nigeria’s hopes of qualifying for the 2026 FIFA World Cup hangs by a thin thread after fluffing a fine chance of beating Zimbabwe at the Godswill Akpabio Stadium to boost their chances last month.

The Super Eagles had defeated Rwanda 2-0 at the Amahoro Stadium in match day five of the qualifiers, hoping to add the Warriors to their casualty list but gave away a 1-0 lead late to settle for a draw 1-1.

That notwithstanding, former Super Eagles forward John Utaka believes it is still early to give up on the chances of booking a ticket for the next World Cup in USA, Canada and Mexico next year.

Speaking to Brila FM, Utaka stated that the players must show more commitment and be determined to still qualify for the 2026 World Cup.

“With the kind of talent we have, we shouldn’t be in this position. We need to come together and stay focused on achieving our World Cup dream. We must be determined like other countries.

“In football, anything can happen. We shouldn’t give up. I still believe we can qualify, but it all depends on how we approach the games ahead.”

The three-time African champions are in fourth place on 7 points, one behind Benin and Rwanda with South Africa leading Group C on 13 points from six qualifying games.

The next round of qualifying games resume in September with Nigeria needing to win all matches to stand a chance of qualifying for the next global football showpiece. The Super Eagles host Rwanda in the first match of the September FIFA window followed by a massive match at Group C leaders South Africa.
