Malawi: Songwe Border United have nothing to lose – Mgangira

Malawi champions Silver Strikers’ coach Peter Mgangira has warned his team to be wary of relegated Songwe Border United who they meet in Lilongwe on Sunday.

TNM Super League defending holders welcome the Northern Region-based rookies at Silver Stadium motivated by the desire to push into the top-two on the 16-member log table.

Silver have a game in hand as they sit in third place with 50 points, six points behind second-placed Mighty Wanderers who take on Ekhaya FC in Blantyre at Kamuzu Stadium. FCB Big Bullets top the table, three points clear of Wanderers after beating Karonga United 2-0 on Saturday.

Ahead of the game, Mgangira explained the challenge of facing opponents who are simply fulfilling the fixtures.

“We are currently back on the training field after the game yesterday. We are trying so much to manage the boys, but they look sharp. Playing against Songwe Border United won’t be easy,” the coach said.

“We are playing a team that is already relegated, and they have nothing to lose. We are playing at home, and we need the three points, but we are not giving ourselves pressure because we know what we are capable of doing. Therefore, we are taking a game at a time.”

The Bankers coach then gave an update on his players’ availability for the home game.

Strikers Chinsisi Maonga and Andrew Joseph will miss the match due to suspension and injury while midfielder remains a fitness doubt.

The Lilongwe-based giants are in form having won three straight league matches without conceding, the latest being a 1-0 victory over Kamuzu Barracks FC in a midweek game.

In contrast, Songwe are on a free fall, they anchor the table with six points from 27 games and have three academic assignments to go.

In other fixtures for Sunday, Kamuzu Barracks welcome Creck Sporting Club, Civo Sporting Club host Moyale Barracks while Blue Eagles take on Chitipa United.
