AFCON: Brys hits out at Cameroon for dropping Onana, Aboubakar

Sacked Cameroon national team coach Marc Brys has taken a swipe at Federation President Samuel Eto’o following his decision to leave out experienced players for the upcoming 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) in Morocco.

While confirming the list of players for the 35th edition of the tournament in the North African nation, Cameroon left out Napoli midfielder Andre-Frank Zambo Anguissa, goalkeeper Andre Onana, striker Vincent Aboubakar and defender Michael Ngadeu-Ngadjui.

Meanwhile, Bryan Mbeumo, Christopher Wooh and Carlos Baleba made the list alongside Eric Junior Dina Ebimbe and Christian Kofane.

‘They are players with character’

“Eto’o left out important players, leaders, because he obviously made the list,” Brys told Afrik Foot as quoted by Tribal Football. “How can you face a tournament of this level without a world-class goalkeeper or without Aboubakar?

“They are players with character, who don’t bow to the president. It’s incredible, but it doesn’t surprise me because he’s a narcissist who thinks he’s the best looking player.”

The Cameroonian Football Federation (Fecafoot) decided to fire Brys, who had been in charge since April 2024. The 63-year-old Belgian had been in an open dispute with Eto’o, who was recently re-elected.
