Champions League: Aubameyang adds 2 assists in Marseille’s thrilling win

Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang’s excellent 2025-26 season continued in the UEFA Champions League on Tuesday with two assists in Olympique Marseille’s victory at Belgian side Royale Union Saint-Gilloise.

The Gabonese forward continues to show that he is much more than a pure goal scorer. Aubameyang provided the match-winning assist for Mason Greenwood at the end of the first half to give OM enough cushion to hold off a fierce rally from the hosts in the second half.

The opening fifteen minutes saw the two teams exchange goals, with Anan Khalaili putting Union ahead inside five minutes. However, Igor Paixão equalized for OM ten minutes later when Aubameyang’s initial shot was saved into the path of the Brazilian forward to finish on the rebound.

Close to halftime, OM struck again and it was Auba who set up Greenwood after collecting a pass in the penalty area. After being unable to find an angle for a shot, the veteran passed over to the former Manchester United player for the finish.

Greenwood completed his brace close to the hour mark and it appeared that the visitors would run away with the victory. But when Khalaili struck again just after seventy minutes, suspense grew as the hosts amplified their efforts to earn at least a point.

Marseille survived a close call several minutes later when Kevin Mac Allister’s goal was ruled out for offsides by VAR. Promise David also had a potential equalizer eliminated by VAR, which was just enough for the French Ligue 1 side to claim all three points.

It is an important victory for Marseille, who move up to 16th place on the table with the result. Aubameyang is enjoying a remarkable campaign at the age of 36, with 8 goals and 10 assists in 19 matches across all competitions. He now has 3 goals and 5 assists in 6 Champions League matches, tied for the most assists in the competition alongside Bayern Munich’s Michael Olise.
