Flamengo, the champions of Copa Libertadores and South America, advanced to the semi-finals of the Intercontinental Cup after defeating CONCACAF champions Cruz Azul 2–1.
The match took place at Ahmad Bin Ali Stadium in Doha, Qatar, and saw Flamengo crowned winners of the “FIFA Derby of the Americas.”
As champions of the Americas, Flamengo move on to the semi-final stage — known as FIFA Challenger Cup — where they will face Pyramids FC, the champions of the African-Asian-Pacific Cup.
The Brazilian team struck first through Giorgian de Arrascaeta in the 15th minute, then Cruz Azul equalised before the break.
In the second half, Arrascaeta proved decisive once again, scoring the winning goal in the 71st minute to send the Brazilian giants into the FIFA Challenger Cup against Pyramids.
For Pyramids supporters, the picture is now clear: the African-Asian-Pacific Cup champions will face Flamengo for a historic spot in the Intercontinental Cup final. With PSG waiting at the summit, Pyramids now stand only one match away from one of the biggest nights in their history against the Frech giants.
