The Phobians managed to squeeze a 1-0 win over Nations at the Legon Sports Stadium, a result that gave hope to their title aspirations. The 2000 CAF Champions League winners failed to glitter in the first half likewise their opponent with the first half producing no goals much to the disappointment of the fans.
The complexion of the second half changed a bit with Hearts of Oak pushing men forward in search of the opener.
Right back Amankwaa Baafi sent in a cross into Nations area, locating George Paaku who controlled beautifully before lobbing for Hamza Issah to head home the opener in the 69th minute.
Nations FC knocked hard from there on but could not unlock Hearts of Oak’s back line with the scores ending 1-0 for the record Ghana FA Cup holders.
The win helped Hearts of Oak recover from last week’s 2-0 defeat against Karela United at the Aliu Mahama Stadium in Tamale.
Hearts of Oak now move into third on the league table with 24 points, two behind second placed Medeama and three away from leaders Aduana after 14 games into the season.
Nations FC were looking to build on last weekend’s 2-1 comeback win at home to Heart of Lions but the defeat keeps them in 11th on 16 points.
However the Ghana Premier League matchday 14 fixture between Bibiani Gold Stars and Medeama has been postponed following Medeama’s release of five players to the domestic-based Ghana national team for their international friendly against South Africa’s Bafana Bafana on December 16.
