Mighty Wanderers now need four points from the remaining two games to seal the TNM Super League title after registering yet another home victory in controversial circumstances on Sunday.
The Nomads edged Civo Service Club 1-0 at Kamuzu Stadium in the commercial capital Blantyre via a first-half own goal from Charles Mafaiti that sparked debate.
The third consecutive home victory reopened Wanderers three-point lead over second-placed FCB Nyasa Big Bullets.
Peter Mponda’s Bullets beat Ekhaya FC 2-0 to bounce back from a loss by a similar margin to Moyale Barracks last week. Maxwell Gasten and Ephraim Kondowe scored for Bullets.
Matters are now not in the hands of the record 17-time champions who can only win the league if Wanderers draw in the remaining two games against Moyale Barracks and Kamuzu Barracks.
Elsewhere, Silver Strikers’ four-game winning league run ended following a one-all draw with Karonga United on Sunday. Both goals came in the second half.
Karonga United took the lead through Alfred Chizinga’s effort from a rebound.
Stain Davie headed Silver Strikers level from a Zebron Kalima’s 79th minute corner-kick.
The Bankers are technically out of the championship race as their maximum tally, if they win the remaining three games, is 66 points. Wanderers have 65 points and Bullets 62 points.
The Nomads maximum tally is 71 points and 69 for Mponda’s side.
