In a move that has sent ripples across East African football, Tanzanian powerhouses Simba SC have appointed South African veteran Steve Barker as their new head coach.
The 57-year-old arrives from Stellenbosch FC on a two-year contract, marking a swift and decisive pivot by the Simba board following the dismissal of Bulgarian tactician Dimitar Pantev.

Barker’s arrival represents a strategic return to South African expertise for “Wekundu wa Msimbazi.” He follows in the footsteps of Fadlu Davids—now at Raja Casablanca—tasked with restoring Simba’s domestic dominance and elevating their continental profile.
Barker brings a glittering CV to Dar es Salaam, highlighted by his recent historic run with Stellenbosch FC. Under his guidance, “Stellies” secured the 2023/24 Carling Knockout Cup and reached the semi-finals of the CAF Confederation Cup.
In an official statement, the club expressed their confidence in Barker’s elite credentials:
“The club’s board has reached an agreement to appoint Steve Robert Barker as the head coach of our team for a period of two years. Barker (57), a South African citizen, has joined our squad from Stellenbosch FC in South Africa. Coach Barker holds an A license from the European Football Association (UEFA) as well as an A license from the Confederation of African Football (CAF).”
The appointment comes as a direct response to a period of instability. Dimitar Pantev, who took the reins in October, saw his tenure cut short after failing to meet the club’s high expectations.
“Steve Barker replaces General Manager Dimitar Pantev, a Bulgarian citizen whose contract was terminated last month due to unsatisfactory performance of the team,” the club confirmed.
Simba fans can expect a total overhaul of the backroom staff. Barker is not arriving alone; he is bringing a specialised support system to ensure his disciplined tactical structures are implemented immediately.
The club noted Barker’s extensive experience across the South African top flight, stating:
“In addition to coaching Stellenbosch, he has also managed Black Aces FC, AmaZulu FC and AmaTuks all in South Africa. Barker will come with his four assistants and will arrive in the country any time from now.”
Barker is expected to touch down in Tanzania in the coming days to begin his tenure. With Simba trailing in their pursuit of the Ligi Kuu Bara title, all eyes will be on whether the South African can spark an immediate “tactical rejuvenation.”
