AFCON: Foster strikes late as South Africa defeat Angola

Lyle Foster’s brilliant finish saw South Africa edged regional rivals Angola by a 2-1 score to kick off Group B action at the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON).

The Burnley striker curled in the match winner in the 79th minute, giving Bafana Bafana three points at the Stade Marrakesh from a spirited clash that could have gone either way.

Both teams looked to attack in an entertaining match but it was the 2010 World Cup hosts who drew first blood in the 21st minute. A floated cross from the right wing by Khuliso Mudau found Orlando Pirates attacker Oswin Appollis, who cut inside from the left wing to fire a low shot past keeper Hugo Marques.

Conceding the opening goal inspired the Palancas Negras to improve their efforts and they found a deserved leveler fifteen minutes later. Captain and playmaker Fredy’s excellent free kick service from the left wing found Show at the near post, who flicked a clever finish past Ronwen Williams in the Bafana Bafana goal.

The match continued to be open and entertaining with the teams remaining level at halftime. Bafana appeared to snatch the lead in the 51st minute but after Tshepang Moremi fired in a low finish, the halftime substitute’s celebrations were cut short when VAR correctly ruled Moremi offsides.

But after both teams traded opportunities, including a long range strike from Bafana defender Mbekezile Mbokazi that rattled the crossbar, it was Foster who awoke to provide the decisive moment. An excellent, quick team movement led to Moremi laying a pass into the path of the striker, whose strike was pure for a worthy winner.

Bafana will have plenty of confidence ahead of their next Group B clash against fellow group favorites Egypt on Friday. Angola will next face Zimbabwe in a must-win match for the Palancas Negras.
