AFCON 2025: Put and Aucho set Uganda’s tone before Tunisia opener

Uganda Cranes step onto Africa’s grandest football stage on Tuesday with a stern examination against Tunisia as their TotalEnergies CAF AFCON 2025 campaign kicks off in Morocco.

After an early start to preparations in Casablanca, head coach Paul Put insists his side is mentally and tactically ready for the demands of Group C, stressing belief, unity and responsibility as the pillars of Uganda’s approach.

The Belgian tactician views the opening fixture not as a burden, but as a rare opportunity for his players to announce themselves on a global platform.

Put noted that representing Uganda at AFCON carries significance beyond the continent, with millions watching worldwide. He believes the squad is fully motivated to rise to the occasion and deliver a performance that reflects the nation’s ambition.

At the heart of the team is skipper Khalid Aucho, whose experience will be vital as Uganda blend seasoned campaigners with youthful energy.

Put highlighted the importance of balance within the squad, insisting that every player, whether in the starting XI or coming off the bench, has a role to play in shaping the team’s fortunes.

Despite arriving in Morocco without all foreign-based players due to travel restrictions, Uganda became the first team to enter camp on December 8.

Put maintains that the early groundwork helped build cohesion and sharpness rather than disrupt preparations, and he is satisfied with the squad’s overall readiness.

Fitness concerns that arose after recent friendly matches have also eased. Put confirmed that players who had minor knocks have since recovered and are available for selection as the Cranes begin their campaign.

While Tunisia arrive with a formidable reputation and an impressive unbeaten run, Put downplayed historical records, choosing instead to focus on his own squad’s strengths.

He acknowledged the quality of the North Africans but reiterated his confidence in Uganda’s ability to compete at the highest level.

With Nigeria also looming in Group C, the Cranes know that a strong start is crucial.

The Tunisia encounter is expected to set the rhythm for Uganda’s AFCON journey, as Put and captain Aucho lead a squad determined to make its mark in Morocco.
