Uganda Cranes’ 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) campaign began with a 3-1 defeat to Tunisia in a Group C encounter played on Tuesday night at the Olympic Stadium.
Despite the loss, the Cranes earned praise from the opposition, with Tunisia midfielder Mejbri Hannibal singling out Travis Mutyaba for an impressive display in the middle of the park. Hannibal, who was one of Tunisia’s standout performers on the night, admitted Uganda posed a stern challenge.
“Uganda were a good team. The conditions were a bit difficult for them, but I hope they have a good tournament,” Hannibal told Kawowo Sports. “The whole team played well, but number ten was outstanding for me.”
The Manchester United academy graduate, currently on the books of Burnley FC, stressed the importance of starting the tournament on a winning note for the 2004 African champions.
“It was very important for us to begin with victory. It gives us momentum going into the next games,” Hannibal added. “We have been on a good run, starting from the World Cup qualifiers, and that could be crucial for our AFCON journey.”
Uganda will now turn their focus to a crucial East African derby against Tanzania on 27th December, as Tunisia prepare for a heavyweight clash with three-time champions Nigeria on the same day.
