Musona writes AFCON history with Zimbabwe

Veteran striker Knowledge Musona’s equalising goal for Zimbabwe in a one-all 2025 Africa Cup of Nations draw with Angola on Friday carried with it greater significance to African football.

The former Kaizer Chiefs man returned to the starting line-up to save the Warriors from defeat at the hands of Angola. He returned to action after having missed his team’s first match which ended in a 2-1 loss to Egypt at the Morocco tournament due to an illness.

His return on Saturday proved inspirational for Mario Marinica’s side which picked up its first point of the ongoing AFCON.

The former Kaizer Chiefs front-man controlled a ball from the left then fired hard and low past the outstretched right leg of Angola’s seasoned goalkeeper Hugo Marques. The goal for the Scottland FC man cancelled out Gerson Dala’s opener for the Angolans.

Aged 35 and some months, Musona became the first Zimbabwean to score in three different AFCON finals, according to Scottland FC’s media.

His first goal at the continental competition came in 2017 against Tunisia, Guinea in 2021 then against Angola.

“Also, Musona today became the first Zimbabwean player to feature in four AFCON finals,” Scottland FC wrote on their page. Musona took his tally to three goals at AFCON, joining legendary Peter Ndlovu.

What other record is Musona chasing?

Overall, Musona is now the fourth oldest scorer at the tournament after Egyptian legend Hossam Hassan who scored in a game against DRC on February 3, 2006 while aged 39 years. The second AFCON oldest scorer is Zambian Kalusha Bwalya after finding the back of the net against Senegal on February 2, 2000 followed by Cameroonian Roger Milla’s strike on March 17, 1988 against Nigeria.

Musona is set to write more history when the Warriors face South Africa later to wind up the group’s assignments.
