Mozambique midfielder Manuel Kambala has stressed the importance of bouncing back from defeat when facing Gabon in Sunday’s Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) match in Morocco.
The Polokwane City FC man told the Mozambique Football Federation (FMF) media that he expects an open game against the West African opposition at Stade de Agadir.
The defensive player has since urged his team mates to take responsibility and provide a strong response at the tournament after making a slow start.
“More than a game, it is an opportunity to respond on the field, with attitude and courage to the confidence of those who believe because when you play for the people, every minute counts and every effort becomes meaningful,” a statement from FMF’s Facebook page reads.
Taking his turn, striker Geny Catamo described Mozambique’s performance at the tournament so far as disappointing but added that all was not lot.
Chiquinho Conde’s men are itching for a first victory at the tournament having started off with a loss to defending champions Ivory Coast on Wednesday. The final group assignment for Conde’s side will be against Cameroon on December 31.
Mozambique did not have the desired preparations for the AFCON finals having only regrouped on December 15 in Portugal. Conde’s men have never gone past the group stages let alone won a match at the AFCON finals.
