Asante Kotoko marched to the summit of the Ghana Premier League table with an emphatic 6-0 victory over Bechem United during Sunday’s week 16 fixture at the Baba Yara Stadium in Kumasi.
Kotoko experienced 1-0 setback at Hohoe United in week 13 but they quickly recovered from that blip to clock two consecutive wins against Dreams fc and Eleven Wonders prior to battering Bechem United in the penultimate fixture of the first half of the season.
Head coach of the club, Karim Zito, discussed the gradual rise in performance by his charges after the big win.
“I am very happy that we are coming back gradually because we had a bout three or four matches which didn’t go well [and] even the last game we played against Eleven Wonders in Accra, I won alright, but I wasn’t happy with the play,” Karim Zito told the media after the game.
Notwithstanding the big win, the former Dreams fc coach believes he is yet to assemble a complete team that is capable of climbing dizzy heights.
“We are still building, we are not there yet, and you people have to be very patient with us because building a team sometimes takes a season, depending on what you want and how you want it, so I am very happy today [that] they’ve been able to score a lot.
Asante Kotoko moved into top spot with 30 points, the same as Medeama, but have a superior 14 goals difference against the Mauve Yellow’s 11 after 16 games into the first half of the campaign.
Bechem United, on the other hand, have not been at their best this first term, managing just 16 points from 16 games and sitting in 17th on the log, one point away from safety.
