De Jongh: ‘Amazulu FC’s new catch Mushore good…but’

Some South Africa’s Betway Premiership football imports arrive with so much promise, only to fizzle out not due to off-the-field distractions.

Therefore, beyond the headlines, Pan-Africa Football delved deeper to establish more about AmaZulu FC’s new signing Mason Mushore on and off the field of play.

The Betway Premiership side announced the Zimbabwean midfielder’s arrival on Tuesday. The 23-year-old has joined AmaZulu from Zimbabwe’s Castle Lager Premier Soccer League (PSL) side Highlanders FC.

On Tuesday, Highlanders released a statement confirming Mushore transfer to the Durban-based club.

“The club confirms that it has reached an agreement with AmaZulu FC for the permanent transfer of Mason Mushore, effective 1 January 2026,” the statement reads.

‘”We are immensely grateful to Mason for his commitment, passion, and outstanding contributions during his time with us. Thank you for the memories. We wish you nothing but the very best as you embark on this exciting new chapter of your career.”

What we should know about Amazulu FC’s Mushore

Pieter De Jongh, Mushore’s former coach at the Bulawayo-based club last season, has since shared his candid assessment of the midfielder’s career.

The free-speaking Dutchman described the former Highlanders man as versatile, capable of playing in multiple positions across the pitch.

“He is a good player….he is a midfielder who can play in the whole midfield from positions 6, 8 and 10. He can also play as a central defender, but his best position is midfield,” the former Jwaneng Galaxy FC coach told Pan-Africa Football.

However,Pieter De Jongh did not beat about the bush on what Mushore needs to improve if he is to hit the ground running in the demanding Betway Premiership.

How good is Mushore technically and tactically?

The former Silver Strikers FC mentor added that in terms of ‘technical and tactical abilities, there is no discussion’. But the coach urged Mushore to work on his lifestyle and discipline.

Surely, the glitz and glamour of the streets of South Africa can be a big distraction for young footballers.

Stories of young footballers’ çareers going down the drain in South Africa due to women, alcohol and drug abuse are common.

Mushore was among Highlanders’ outstanding players last season. His free-kick carried Highlanders past Herentals College FC and into the Chibuku Super Cup quarter-final at Nyamhunga Stadium yesterday in September.

Mushore has joined compatriot striker Thandolwenkosi Ngwenya at AmaZulu FC.
