South Africa’s AFCON tormentor strikes in Scotland

Zimbabwean striker Tawanda Maswanhise, who teased and tormented South Africa at the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) finals on Monday, has carried his red-hot form to the Scottish Premiership.

Days after exiting the continental finals underway in Morocco, the Warriors forward delivered the goods once again on his return to his club Motherwell FC.

The Warriors’ rising star scored the opening goal to put Motherwell FC on the path to a 2-0 victory over St Mirren in the Scottish William Hill Premiership. Elliot Watt netted the hosts’ other goal as they climbed up to fourth place in the log table, 10 points behind leaders Hearts FC.

How Maswanhise stole show in Scotland

Maswanhise is Motherwell FC’s leading league scorer with 13 goals for the Fir Park side this season. Saturday’s goal made it 14 overall for the AFCON rising star across all competitions.

The towering forward returned to Scotland earlier in the week following Zimbabwe’s exit from the continental competition in Morocco. He scored for Mario Marinica’s side during their 2-3 loss to rivals South Africa in Morocco in a Group B match on Monday.

Maswanhise scored probably a goal of the tournament underway in Morocco.

He sliced through Bafana Bafana’s defence like a hot knife on butter before firing past goalkeeper Ronwen Williams. Maswanhise, making a rare start, brought the two teams level after Divine Lunga’s effort had given Hugo Broos’ men the lead.

The 23-year-old is among the golden generation for Zimbabwe alongside the likes of Wolverhampton Wanderers winger Tawanda Chirewa and Antonio Bill. On Saturday, Chirewa came off the bench as Wolves cruised to a 3-0 victory over West Ham United in a Premier League match.
