AFCON: Nigeria striker Victor Osimhen admits Algeria were good side

Nigeria striker Victor Osimhen has downplayed his role for the Super Eagles after they progressed to the semifinals of the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) in Morocco on Saturday.

Osimhen scored his fourth goal of the competition and assisted as Nigeria edged Algeria 2-0 to seal their place in the semi-finals of the 2025 edition in the North African nation.

First, Osimhen rose highest to thunder home a precise Bruno Onyemaechi cross with a powerful header in the 27th minute. Ten minutes later, the Galatasaray forward turned the provider after he slid in Akor Adams to slot it past goalkeeper Luca Zidane and double their lead.

‘We should focus on team effort’

“I scored a goal and provided an assist, but we shouldn’t focus on my personal performance; we should focus on the team effort of the national team. We won against a good Algerian team that has talented players,” Osimhen told CAFOnline.com.

“For me, I was involved in the game, reflecting on my experience in the previous Africa Cup of Nations. It’s not just about scoring decisive goals, but about how we influence the game and contribute to the victory—that’s what matters most in the national team.

“I always strive to improve myself, both mentally and physically.”

Nigeria in their 16th AFCON semifinal appearance will face hosts Morocco in the semifinal of the tournament. Morocco reached the stage following their 2-0 win against Cameroon.
