Morocco international Abdessamad Ezzalzouli has discussed their win against Nigeria in the quarterfinals of the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) on Wednesday.
Goalkeeper Yassine Bounou emerged the hero as hosts Morocco booked their place in the final for the first time in 22 years, edging Nigeria 4-2 on penalties after a 0-0 semi-final in Rabat on Wednesday.
After 90 minutes and extra time failed to separate the sides, the contest was settled from the penalty spot, where Bounou rose to the occasion in front of a packed Stade Prince Moulay Abdellah.
The Morocco goalkeeper underlined his status as one of the continent’s finest, producing decisive saves to deny Samuel Chukwueze and Bruno Onyemaechi and propel the Atlas Lions one step closer to glory.
“I would like to thank the Moroccan people who came to the stadium to encourage us. It was intense. We played as if our lives depended on it. We fight for Morocco; we do everything for them,” he told the media.
“It was incredible, we felt it at several points. I hope they will continue to be behind us in the final,” commented the player, who concluded with powerful words: “We are playing at home, it’s like we are playing with an extra player.”
Neil El Aynaoui said: “We are very happy. We will enjoy tonight, then quickly switch our attention to Sunday’s match, starting tomorrow,” before adding: “The Moroccan people have been waiting for this for a long time, so we will prepare for the match in the best possible way.”
Meanwhile, Ezzalzouli, El Aynaoui praised the 12th man for playing a key role. He said: “It’s exceptional. Playing in this stadium with 60,000 supporters is crazy. I think they realize the importance they have in the matches.”
Morocco will face Senegal in the final at Prince Moulay Abdellah Stadium in Rabat on Sunday.
