Geny Catamo makes successful return to club duties with brace in Sporting CP victory

Mozambique national team star Geny Catamo returned from a successful 2025 Africa Cup of Nations tournament by scoring twice for Portuguese Primeira Liga title contenders Sporting CP in a 3-0 victory over Casa Pia.

The diminutive playmaker’s brilliant left foot was on full display for the defending champions on Friday, who had no issues against relegation candidates Casa Pia in Lisbon.

After the visitors did well to keep the match scoreless through the opening thirty minutes, a strong finish to the first half left Sporting in a strong position. Receiving a pass on the right wing from Trincão, Catamo cut inside and attempted a shot that took a severe deflection on its way past Casa Pia goalkeeper Patrick Sequeira in the 38th minute.

Five minutes later, he doubled his tally in similar fashion. Once again cutting inside from the right wing, this time the Mozambique star needed no deflection to fire past Sequeira. Daniel Bragança finished off the scoring in the second half for the Green and Whites, who have not lost a league match since late August when they fell to current leaders FC Porto.

Catamo now has five goals and three assists in twenty matches across all competitions for his club. At the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations with Mozambique, the Mambas star provided a goal and an assist in four matches while leading his nation to their first-ever victory at the tournament.

Sporting, who remain four points back of Porto in second place, will next return to continental action when they host defending champions Paris Saint-Germain on Tuesday in the UEFA Champions League.
