Hamed Traoré and Amine Gouiri score in dominant victory for Marseille

Hamed Traoré and Amine Gouiri continued their successful returns after spending months out of action on Saturday with Traoré producing a goal and an assist while Gouiri also scored in Olympique Marseille’s 5-2 Ligue 1 thrashing of Angers.

After scoring his first goal for the club on Tuesday against amateur side Bayeux FC in a 9-0 Coupe de France victory, Traoré found the net for his first Ligue 1 goal with OM. Gouiri added two goals and an assist in the cup match before returning to the scoresheet in league play on Saturday. Both players returned with substitute appearances against Nantes on January 4 after each spent months out of action.

Les Phocéens got off to an excellent start away from home and did not look back at the Stade Raymond Kopa. Algerian international Gouiri opened the scoring inside twenty minutes to set in motion a complete collapse from the hosts.

Mason Greenwood doubled the lead five minutes later and Traoré added another goal. The Ivorian international, on loan from English Premier League club Bournemouth, then assisted Timothy Weah to make it 4-0. French-Moroccan forward Amine Sbaï did provide a response for Angers in first half stoppage time.

But the damage was done with an insurmountable lead for the visitors. The two teams traded late goals in the final minutes, with Gabon international winer Jim Allevinah scoring his first goal of the season for Angers, but OM took home the three points.

The signs are encouraging for both players. Traoré has been limited to only five appearances in all competitions this season due to a leg injury but will be hopeful that he can achieve a permanent transfer to OM. His loan contains an obligation for Marseille to buy if certain conditions are met and it appears that Ligue 1 may be the best destination for the 25-year-old, who thrived last season on loan with Auxerre (10 goals in 26 appearances).

Gouiri enjoyed a strong start to life after joining his current club midway through last season on a permanent basis. The Algerian forward has 4 goals and 2 assists in 10 matches across all competitions this campaign and will look to have a strong second half of the campaign after his season was disrupted by a shoulder ailment.
