Ligi Kuu Bara: Azam FC and Singida Black Stars drop points

A difficult 2025-26 campaign continued for Tanzanian big spenders Singida Black Stars while Azam FC also failed to secure maximum points from Tuesday’s matches in the nation’s top flight Ligi Kuu Bara.

JKT Tanzania forward Salehe Karabaka spoiled the day for Singida supporters when he went around goalkeeper Metacha Mnata to finish for the only goal of the match in a 1-0 victory for the league’s surprise package. JKT move into top spot for the time being with the result, one point ahead of reigning champions Young Africans with four more matches played.

Ever since the departure of former coach Miguel Angel Gamondi to lead the Tanzania national team, it has been a difficult period for Singida. They have not won a league match since a 1-0 result over Mashujaa on September 30 and their involvement in the CAF Confederation Cup has only made things more difficult for them. They are currently in 11th place on the league table with only nine points from seven matches.

In fact, October 25 marked their last victory in all competitions when they defeated Burundian club Flambeau du Centre 3-1 in the second leg to achieve a 4-2 aggregate victory and qualify for the group stage of the CAF Confederation Cup. They have one point from two matches in Group C of the Confederation Cup.

In the earlier match from Tuesday, Azam FC could only manage a 0-0 draw at home against Fountain Gate.

“We did not find the solution to the low block (of Fountain Gate),” said renowned Congolese coach Florent Ibengé in a post-match interview. Charged with the difficult task of boosting Azam to the ranks of famous fellow Dar es Salaam clubs Young Africans and Simba SC, Ibengé is doing well with plenty of work still remaining for the club known as the “third club” in Tanzanian football.

Under the coach’s guidance, Azam FC stunned Simba twice in the last two months including a 2-0 victory in league action before a break ensued in observance of the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations. The Ice Cream Makers are in 5th place on the league table following Tuesday’s result.

The nation’s top clubs (Young Africans, Simba, Singida Black Stars and Azam FC) will now turn their focus to continental competition. Azam, who lost their opening two matches in Group B in the CAF Confederation Cup, will look to bounce back with a favorable matchup against Kenya’s Nairobi United on February 1.
