Zambia international Clatous Chama has discussed his decision to sign for Tanzanian Premier League outfit Simba SC as they prepare for their return to the CAF Champions League on Saturday.
Ahead of their fixture against Esperance of Tunisia, Simba management brought back former midfielder to the team as part of a strategy to strengthen the midfield this season.
Chama, who was a key player for Simba for several seasons, is remembered for his significant contribution to local and international success, including reaching the quarter-finals of the Champions League.
“I may not be able to promise trophies outright, but I can promise my commitment, my love, and my prayers for Simba, so that Simba will continue to exist and to grow bigger. I pray to God to give us wisdom so that we can move forward and succeed,” said Chama as quoted by Bola News.
“I know Simba fans have expectations coming from me, from the team, from the leadership, and from everyone working at Simba, because Simba is a big team.”
He added: “Returning home to Simba was not about taking on easy challenges; the challenges are tough. But those who are close to me know that I truly love Simba.
“And that makes things easier for me. Decisions become simpler. I know this return was not easy because Simba had a different team at the time.”
His experience, ability to create chances and score important goals are cited as the main reasons for Simba to bring him back. He had already been drafted into the squad that arrived in Tunis, for their first win in Group D of the Champions League qualifier against ES Tunis on Saturday.
The Msimbazi Reds have lost all their opening two fixtures.
Goalkeepers; Hussein Abel, Alexander Erasto, Djibrilla Kassali.
Defenders; Shomari Kapombe, David Kameta, Anthony Mligo, Nickson Kibabage, Wilson Nangu, Rushine De Reuck, Ismael Toure, Vedastus Masinde.
Midfielders; Yusuph Kagoma, Naby Kamara, Kibu Denis, Elie Mpanzu, Morice Abram, Clatous Chama, Morice Abraham, Neo Maema, Libasse Gueye, Hussein Semfuko.
Strikers; Selemani Mwalimu, Jonathan Sowah.
Chama is no stranger to Simba supporters. During his previous spell at the club, the Zambian international established himself as one of the most influential midfielders in the region, playing a pivotal role in Simba’s domestic dominance and memorable runs on the continental stage — including a historic appearance in the CAF Champions League quarter-finals.
His return comes at a time when Simba are seeking leadership, composure, and creativity in midfield, particularly against elite opposition such as Espérance, one of Africa’s most decorated clubs.
Speaking candidly about his decision, Chama admitted that coming back to Simba was not the simplest choice, but one driven by loyalty and belief in the club’s project.
“I may not be able to promise trophies outright, but I can promise my commitment, my love, and my prayers for Simba, so that Simba will continue to exist and to grow bigger,” Chama said, as quoted by Bola News.
“I pray to God to give us wisdom so that we can move forward and succeed.”
The 32-year-old also acknowledged the weight of expectation that comes with wearing the Simba shirt.
“I know Simba fans have expectations coming from me, from the team, from the leadership, and from everyone working at Simba, because Simba is a big team.”
Chama stressed that his return was motivated by affection for the club rather than convenience.
“Returning home to Simba was not about taking on easy challenges; the challenges are tough,” he explained.
“But those who are close to me know that I truly love Simba. And that makes things easier for me. Decisions become simpler.”
He added that the timing of his return made the move even more demanding.
“I know this return was not easy because Simba had a different team at the time.”
Those remarks underline the midfielder’s awareness that he is joining a squad in transition, tasked with rediscovering its rhythm and confidence in one of Africa’s toughest competitions.
Simba’s technical bench believes Chama’s experience, tactical intelligence, chance creation, and ability to score decisive goals can help stabilise the team during a challenging phase of the season. His understanding of the club’s culture and expectations is also seen as a major asset, particularly in high-pressure continental fixtures.
The Zambian has already been integrated into the squad that travelled to Tunis, underlining the urgency of his return. Simba will be hoping his presence brings calm and belief as they look to secure their first points in Group D.
Simba face a stern examination against Espérance, a side renowned for their physicality, tactical discipline, and formidable home support. The Tunisian giants are perennial contenders in the Champions League and rarely drop points at home.
For Simba, the match represents an opportunity to reset their campaign. A positive result would not only revive qualification hopes but also inject confidence into a squad under pressure after early setbacks.
The Msimbazi Reds have named a balanced squad blending experience and youth for the trip to Tunisia.
